The Appalachian Trail stretches over 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine. Part of the Appalachian Trail crosses the southwest tip of Watauga Lake, actually over the top of the Watauga Lake Dam. There are several points in the Watauga Lake Tennessee area where you can enter the Appalachian Trail for day hikes. The Appalachian Trail passes through Shook Branch Recreation Area at the western end of the lake. You will spend about 5 miles hiking the Appalachian Trail from Shook Branch to the Watauga Lake Dam.

Watauga Lake sits in the northern section of the Cherokee National Forest Tennessee. The Cherokee National Forest is home to 600 miles of the Appalachian Trail, hundreds of miles of coldwater streams, seven whitewater rivers, three large lakes, 11 wilderness areas, 30 developed campgrounds, 45 developed day-use sites, and an abundance of wildlife. Less than an hour from our Watauga Lake Vacation Rental Cabin is a small town in Southwest Virginia called Damascus. Damascus is not only a popular stop for Appalachian Trail thru-hikers but it's the center of all things Virginia Creeper Bike Trail-related. The Virginia Creeper Bike Trail is 34 miles of former railroad bed and is a mellow, low-grade trail perfect for biking. There are several bike rental outfitters in Damascus who also offer a shuttle to the trailhead at White Top. This is a wonderful way to spend your afternoon!
